چکیده

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva, is now starting operation. It will ultimately provide protonproton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, a design luminosity of 10 cm−2 s−1 and a bunch-crossing rate of 40 MHz. The ATLAS collaboration has built a general purpose experiment for the LHC which is described in [1][2]. The trigger and data acquisition (T/DAQ) system must work in the challenging environment of ∼ 10 interactions per second and the large number (∼ 10) of readout channels of the ATLAS detector. The initial data stream of 1PB/s must be reduced to the ∼ 300 MB/s which can be sustained to mass storage, while efficiently retaining a maximum acceptance of physics signatures for offline analysis. To achieve this, ATLAS has designed a three-level trigger system (see Fig. 1) [3].

Operation of the upgraded ATLAS Central Trigger Processor during the LHC Run 2

The ATLAS Central Trigger Processor (CTP) is responsible for forming the Level-1 trigger decision based on the information from the calorimeter andmuon trigger processors. In order to cope with the increase of luminosity and physics cross-sections in Run 2, several components of this system have been upgraded. In particular, the number of usable trigger inputs and trigger items have been increa...

ATLAS Trigger and Data Acquisition: Capabilities and Commissioning

The ATLAS trigger system is based on three levels of event selection that selects the physics of interest from an initial bunch crossing rate of 40 MHz to an output rate of ∼200 Hz compatible with the offline computing power and storage capacity. During nominal LHC operations at a luminosity of 1034 cm−2s−1, decisions must be taken every 25 ns. The LHC is expected to begin operations with a pea...

ATLAS TDAQ System Integration and Commissioning

The ATLAS detector will be exposed to proton proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 14 TeV with the bunch crossing rate of 40 MHz. A three-level trigger system has been designed to reduce this rate down to the level at which only interesting events are fully reconstructed. The level 1 trigger reduces the rate down to 75 kHz via custom-built electronics. The Region of Interest Builder d...

Event filter monitoring with the ATLAS tile calorimeter

The ATLAS Tile Calorimeter detector is presently involved in an intense phase of subsystems integration and commissioning with muons of cosmic origin. Various monitoring programs have been developed at different levels of the data flow to tune the set-up of the detector running conditions and to provide a fast and reliable assessment of the data quality already during data taking. This paper fo...

The ATLAS online High Level Trigger framework: experience reusing offline software components in the ATLAS trigger

Event selection in the ATLAS High Level Trigger is accomplished to a large extent by reusing software components and event selection algorithms developed and tested in an offline environment. Many of these offline software modules are not specifically designed to run in a heavily multi-threaded online data flow environment. The ATLAS High Level Trigger (HLT) framework based on the GAUDI and ATL...

Upgrade of the ATLAS Level-1 Trigger with event topology information

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2015 will collide proton beams with increased luminosity from 10 up to 3 × 1034cm−2s−1. ATLAS is an LHC experiment designed to measure decay properties of high energetic particles produced in the protons collisions. The higher luminosity places stringent operational and physical requirements on the ATLAS Trigger in order to reduce the 40MHz collision rate to a...
